Active Scripting (formerly known as ActiveX Scripting) is the technology used in Windows to implement component-based scripting support. It is based on OLE Automation (part of COM ) and allows installation of additional scripting engines in the form of COM modules.
Microsoft renamed some parts of OLE relating to the Internet as ActiveX, and gradually renamed all OLE technologies to ActiveX, except the compound document technology that was used in Microsoft Office. Later in 1996, Microsoft extended COM to work across the network with DCOM. [6]
