The beluga whale (/ b ɪ ˈ l uː ɡ ə /; [4] Delphinapterus leucas) is an Arctic and sub-Arctic cetacean. It is one of two members of the family Monodontidae, along with the narwhal, and the only member of the genus Delphinapterus.
Beluga whales are small, white Arctic whales notable for their unusual color, gregarious nature, and giant, bulbous heads which often give them the appearance of animated creatures.
The cetacean family Monodontidae comprises two living whale species, the narwhal and the beluga whale and at least four extinct species, known from the fossil record. Beluga and Narwhal are native to coastal regions and pack ice around the Arctic Ocean.
The expansion features the Arctic Coast, a 1-acre (4,000 m 2) outdoor beluga whale display containing 760,000-US-gallon (2,900,000 L) of water. The aquarium hosted several marine mammals from the Shedd Aquarium while it was undergoing renovation to its marine mammal habitat between September 2008 and May 2009.
