The Ibanez Universe is the first mass-produced solid body seven-string electric guitar, developed by Steve Vai and manufactured by Ibanez. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] The Universe is a seven-string version of the Ibanez JEM series, Vai's signature model.
Since the release of RG7620 and 7621 in 1998, RGs are famous for being the basis of particularly easy to play seven string guitars. Also, in 2007, Ibanez produced its first commercially available 8 string guitar, the RG2228. Ibanez introduced their first commercial nine-string models, the RG9QM and RG90BKP, for 2014.
Ibanez re-introduced the Ibanez S 7 string due to popular demand in 2007. A similar model had been discontinued and 7 string models were left to the RG series and some signature guitars.
The Ibanez Q was released in June 2021 [12] as its new headless guitar series, with 6 and 7 string models and a 25.5" scale length. They feature a small nyatoh body and a new bridge developed by Ibanez, the Mono-Tune.
The first mass-produced seven-string was the Ibanez UV7, a signature model for Steve Vai. [20] It was also used by John Petrucci , Reb Beach , and Korn guitarists Brian Welch and James Shaffer , amongst others. [ 21 ]
There are 5 JEM sub-model numbers: 7, 77, 777. 505 and 555. JEM777 was the first JEM sub-model, created in 1987. Currently Ibanez no longer sells this model, thus some of these models are quite rare [citation needed], especially the JEM777LNG, which was a limited run and each model was hand-signed by Steve Vai.
