The Vale of White Horse is a local government district of Oxfordshire in England. It was historically part of Berkshire. The area is commonly referred to as the 'Vale of the White Horse'. It is crossed by the Ridgeway National Trail in its far south, across the North Wessex Downs AONB at the junction of four counties.
The non-metropolitan district of Vale of White Horse and its council were created on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972. Bourton is a village and civil parish in the Vale of White Horse, England, about 4 miles (6.4 km) southeast of Highworth in neighbouring Wiltshire.Bourton was part of the parish of Shrivenham until 1867, [2] and was in Berkshire until the 1974 local government boundary changes transferred the Vale of White Horse to Oxfordshire.
District-level functions passed to the Vale of White Horse District Council. A successor parish covering the area of the former borough was created called Abingdon, with its council taking the name Abingdon Town Council. [48] The parish was formally renamed to Abingdon-on-Thames in 2012. [24]
Upton is a spring line village and civil parish at the foot of the Berkshire Downs, about 2 miles (3 km) south of Didcot in the Vale of the White Horse district. Littleworth used to be part of the ecclesiastical parish of Great Faringdon. At the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 it appears to have been part of the manor of Worth. The manor became known as Wadley by the 13th century, and in 1440 Henry VI granted it to Oriel College, Oxford. [2]
