Sugarloaf Hill is part of a ridge running northeast and southwest close to the east shore of the Hudson. The peak of Castle Rock lies off the northeast end of the ridge, while NY 9D runs along the west side. A small stream runs along the southeast side and flows into the Hudson, while to the northwest, the ground declines gently to the Hudson.
Sugarloaf Mountain is within New York's Catskill State Park. The Devil's Path hiking trail traverses the summit ridge of Sugarloaf. The Long Path , a 357 mi (575 km) long-distance hiking trail through southeastern New York, is contiguous with this stretch of the Devil's Path.

The blue trail system is popular with hikers while the yellow trail system can also be used by bikers and horseback riders at designated times of the year. The Strong Mansion at the base of the mountain is often used for weddings and other special events, and the nearby Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard is a popular side excursion.
