Section 60 of the Constitution of Saint Lucia provides that the prime minister must be a member of the House of Assembly and that the governor-general shall "appoint a member of the House who appears to him likely to command the support of the majority of the members of the House", or if the House is dissolved, "a person who was a member of the House immediately before the dissolution".

Allen Michael Chastanet (born 20 November 1960 [2]) is a Saint Lucian businessman and politician who served as Prime Minister of Saint Lucia from 2016 to 2021. Sir Allan Fitzgerald Laurent Louisy KCMG PC (5 September 1916 – 2 March 2011) was the second prime minister of independent St Lucia, following Sir John Compton in office. He was born in Laborie on 5 September 1916 and served as a judge [1] before being elected to parliament in 1974.
