Thuja plicata is a large evergreen coniferous tree in the family Cupressaceae, native to the Pacific Northwest of North America. Its common name is western redcedar in the U.S. [2] or western red cedar in the UK, [3] and it is also called pacific red cedar, giant arborvitae, western arborvitae, just cedar, giant cedar, or shinglewood. It is the largest living Western redcedar, the largest known tree in Canada and one of the largest in the world. [3]
The Duncan Cedar, also known as the Duncan Memorial Cedar and the Nolan Creek Tree, is a large specimen of Western redcedar. The tree is located on the Olympic Peninsula in the U.S. state of Washington. [1] It is currently the largest known Western redcedar in the world, [2] (compare to the Cheewhat Giant on Canada's Vancouver Island. [3]
