Tanjiro and Nezuko also meet Tamayo and Yushiro, two demons free from Muzan's control. They ally to develop a cure for Nezuko, though it will require Tanjiro to supply Tamayo with blood samples from the Twelve Kizuki, the twelve most powerful demons under Muzan's command, split into the six Lower Ranks and the six Upper Ranks.
Tanjiro Kamado lives a quiet, peaceful life with his family in the snowy mountains of Japan, providing for them by selling charcoal at the nearby town. One day, he returns home and finds his entire family slaughtered in a demon attack, with the exception of his younger sister, Nezuko, who has been transformed into a demon herself.
Tanjiro laments it has cost Nezuko's life but she is revealed to be alive, is no longer burning and has started speaking again after her bamboo mouthpiece slips off. Through Hantengu's memories, demon king Muzan Kibutsuji learns Nezuko is immune to sunlight and realizes that his goal to become immortal will be fulfilled if he devours Nezuko.
Tanjiro ends up facing the real Kizuki Rui as he was disciplining a demon he forced to be his sister, revealing that assembled the spider demons to create his own familial bonds and takes an interest in Nezuko. Tanjiro is overpowered while trying to save Nezuko, causing him to remember watching his frail father dance the Hinokami Kagura.

Tatsuhiko Katayama, their editor, was worried about the one-shot crusade being too dark for the young demographic and asked Gotouge if they could write another type of the main character who would be "brighter".
