Lake Taneycomo originated when the White River was confined by the completion of the Powersite Dam, near Forsyth, Missouri, in 1913. [2] From 1913 until 1958 it was a warm water lake. Stockton State Park is a public recreation area occupying 2,176 acres (881 ha) on the shore of Stockton Lake, nine miles (14 km) south of Stockton, Missouri.The state park occupies a northward jutting peninsula between the Big Sac and Little Sac arms of the 25,000-acre (10,000 ha) lake, which was created when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dammed the Sac River in 1969.
The park also features caves, sinkholes, and bluffs overlooking the lake. It is a prominent example of karst topography, which is geological formation shaped by the dissolution of a layer or layers of soluble bedrock. [5] A 70-acre (28 ha) portion of the park was designated as the Ha Ha Tonka Karst Natural Area in 1981. [6]
