Life in Hell is a comic strip by Matt Groening that was published weekly from 1977 to 2012. Its main characters include anthropomorphic rabbits and a gay couple. The comic covers a wide range of subjects, such as love, sex, work, and death, and explores themes of angst, social alienation, self-loathing, and fear of inevitable doom.
Matthew Abram Groening (/ ˈ ɡ r eɪ n ɪ ŋ / GRAY-ning; born February 15, 1954) is an American cartoonist, writer, producer, and animator.He is best known as the creator of the television series The Simpsons (1989–present), Futurama (1999–2003, 2008–2013, 2023–present), [1] and Disenchantment (2018–2023), and the comic strip Life in Hell (1977–2012).
When Homer is performing a sock-puppet show to Lisa and Bart, he uses Akbar and Jeff, characters from Matt Groening's weekly comic strip Life in Hell. [1] [2] Homer follows behind the house that was the birthplace of Edgar Allan Poe, which was placed in the episode by David Silverman.
The company was named after Bongo, a rabbit character in Groening's comic strip Life in Hell. Bongo, at some time in its history, printed Simpsons Comics, Simpsons Comics and Stories, Futurama Comics, Krusty Comics, Lisa Comics, Bart Simpson, Bartman, Itchy & Scratchy Comics and Radioactive Man.
Groening later realized that animating Life in Hell would require the rescinding of publication rights for his life's work, and passed on the offer. Richard Sakai contacted Groening to see if he had any other characters he would be willing to let Fox merchandise, and, in short, Groening developed a dysfunctional family that became the Simpsons.
During the first four seasons of The Simpsons, Bart was the show's main character. The name "Bart" is an anagram of the word "brat". [ 28 ] Groening conceived Bart as an extreme version of the typical misbehaving child character, merging all of the extreme traits of characters such as Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn into one person.
