Guru Kashi University (GKU) has been established by the Act of the Legislature of the state of Punjab, under the "Guru Kashi University Act 2011" (Punjab Act No 37 of 2011), to provide education at all levels in all disciplines of higher education GKU is a residential university with separate hostels for boys and girls housing more than 7000 students.
The city is named after Har Sahai (1725 – 1750), who was the direct descendant of the fourth Sikh guru, the Guru Ram Das, in the eighth generation. [1] [2] The Pothimala building was built in 1705 and the locality of Guru Har Sahai was founded in 1745 by Har Sahai's father, Guru Jiwan Mal (born 1694), who was a direct descendant of the fourth Sikh guru, Ram Das, in the seventh generation.
The college was founded by Sant Fateh Singh in year 1964 [1] and has been named as Guru Kashi, as this land was blessed by 10th Sikh Guru Guru Gobind Singh as Hamari Kanshi, [2] a centre of higher learning in those times.
