The Benjamin Cushway House is a single family home located near the corner of Rust Avenue and Fordney Street in Saginaw, Michigan. Built in 1844, it is the oldest surviving residence in Saginaw County. [2] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. [1]

Saginaw (/ ˈ s æ ɡ ɪ n ɔː /) is a city in and the seat of Saginaw County, Michigan, United States. [4] It had a population of 44,202 at the 2020 census. [5] Located along the Saginaw River, Saginaw is adjacent to Saginaw Charter Township and considered part of Greater Tri-Cities region of Central Michigan.
Abel Brockway was born in 1818, and arrived in Saginaw in 1856. A shrewd businessman, he invested in a number of early ventures in Saginaw, including lumbering, railroads, banking, and other industries. In 1859, he purchased a plot of farmland (now bounded by Wells, Thurman, Gratiot, and Brockway Streets) from Benjamin Cushway.

On August 20, 1794, he fought with General Anthony Wayne at the Battle of Fallen Timbers against a mixed Canadian and Native American force. He also acted as interpreter. He moved to Detroit, where his father had opened a trading store, and in 1797, married Josette Labadie.
