At Cultra, visitors can access the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum, which occasionally uses a private rail siding for museum operations, though it is not open to passenger services. Titanic Quarter Station serves the SSE Arena , Titanic Quarter , and W5 an interactive science and discovery centre.
Cultra station features in the documentary film A Letter from Ulster (1942); the narrator incorrectly describes the station as Coleraine. [6] [7] Due to low passenger numbers, the Ulster Transport Authority closed the station on 11 November 1957. [2] However, subsequently the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum was established at Cultra.
Dalchoolin House stood on the site of the present Ulster Transport Museum, while Cultra Manor was built between 1902–04 and now houses the Ulster Folk Museum. [6] The railway line from Belfast to Holywood opened in 1848, and this led to rapid development. The population of Holywood was approximately 3,500 in 1900 and had grown to 12,000 by 2001.
Following the Wilson report in 1995 it was decided to merge the Ulster Museum with the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum and the Ulster American Folk Park. The Museums and Galleries (Northern Ireland) Order 1997 realised this goal. Armagh County Museum was included in this plan and became part of National Museums Northern Ireland (NMNI).
