The Powerglide is a two-speed automatic transmission designed by General Motors. It was available primarily on Chevrolet from January 1950 [ 1 ] through 1973, although some Pontiac models also used this automatic transmission after the fire at the Hydra-Matic factory in 1953.
1950–1973 Powerglide — 2-speed Chevrolet (also used by Pontiac, Holden, Vauxhall and Opel). 1953-1955 Twin Turbine Dynaflow : the 1st redesign w/ 2 turbines & single stator. 1956-1957 Twin Turbine 2 Dynaflow : the 2nd redesign w/ 2 turbines & variable-pitch stator.
A quite sophisticated valve body timed shifts and apply pressures carefully in Drive range to ensure smoothness and prevent 'hunting' between gears, which is a common complaint of small cars with automatic transmission. Corvair Powerglides had a good reputation for reliability and were ordered on a large majority of Corvair passenger cars.
The 6L 50 (and similar 6L 45) is a 6-speed longitudinally-mounted automatic transmission produced by General Motors. It is very similar in design to the larger GM 6L 80 and 6L 90, and is produced at GM Powertrain plants in Toledo, Ohio; Silao, Guanajuato, Mexico; and by the independent Punch Powerglide company in Strasbourg, France.
The 4L60 however is hydraulically shifted based on governor pressure and throttle valve (TV) cable position. 1992 was the last year of widespread usage of the 700R4 (4L60). The 1993 Camaro, Corvette and Typhoon were equipped with the last production 700R4. The last design change of the 700R4 was an added checkball to the valve body.
It conceivably could have been drilled for the Chevrolet but there was never a reason to do that as the Powerglide was a strong transmission. The Super Turbine 300 was discontinued entirely after the 1969 model year in favor of the TH400 and lighter TH350 Turbo-Hydramatic, the latter using the Super Turbine 300's tailhousing.
