Cooper University Hospital was established in 1887 by the family of Richard M. Cooper, a Quaker physician. The original hospital had 30 beds and provided health care services to the low-income population of Camden, New Jersey. It slowly grew from a small community hospital into a 635-bed [3] regional tertiary care center.
In December 2022 the Cape Regional Health System stated that it planned to become a part of Cooper University Health. [1] The agreement to do so was signed in April 2023. [2] Cooper took possession of the hospital on July 1, 2024 and gave it its current name. [3]
The Cooper Medical Education Building, a LEED Gold certified building, [2] is located on South Broadway on the Cooper Health Sciences campus. It opened in July 2012 and contains a 260-seat auditorium, a 140-seat multipurpose room, 25 active learning rooms, a clinical simulation center, and a satellite medical library.
Coriell Institute was chartered in 1953 as the South Jersey Medical Research Foundation Laboratory and constructed facilities in 1956. The laboratory was later named for director Lewis L. Coriell, who had worked at the Camden Municipal Hospital and developed aseptic tissue culture techniques that ultimately allowed poliovirus to be grown in culture.
