    Kincardine derives from Gaelic “kin” or “ceann” meaning head and Pictish “cardain” (Welsh cardden) meaning wood. It originally applied to the vicinity of the church, from where it extended to the district looked after by the church, namely the parish. Ardgay derives from the Gaelic words “ard” and “gaoith”, meaning windy height.
