Kaizer Chiefs were the defending champions, having won the previous 2012–13 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season. The season featured 14 teams from the 2012-13 season and two new teams promoted from the 2012–13 National First Division: Polokwane City and Mpumalanga Black Aces who replace relegated Black Leopards and Chippa United.

Polokwane City Football Club is a South African professional football club based in the city of Polokwane in the Limpopo province that currently plays in the first tier South African Premiership. The team plays its home matches at the Peter Mokaba Stadium .
This current 2022–23 of the South African Premier Division is Kaizer Chiefs' 27th consecutive season in the PSL League. [ 1 ] In December 2022 Kaizer Chiefs reached an agreement with the Municipality of Polokwane and signed an agreement to play some of their home games at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
