The novel was made into a movie in 1987 by Tissa Abeysekera. [4] Viragaya is considered one of the best novels of the writer. It exhibits the influences of Existentialism on Wickramasinghe specially through the character of Lokusuriya, the retired postmaster. Sarojini, Menaka, Bathee, Siridasa are the other prominent characters in the novel.
The largest part of Sri Lankan literature was written in the Sinhala language, but there is a considerable number of works in other languages used in Sri Lanka over the millennia (including Tamil, Pāli, and English). However, the languages used in ancient times were very different from the language used in Sri Lanka now.
Amba Yaluwo (Sinhala: අඹ යාලුවෝ, lit. 'Best Friends') is a 1957 novel by Sri Lankan author Tikiri Bandara Ilangaratne. [1] [2] [3] The novel has been translated into multiple languages with the English translation by Seneviratne B. Aludeniya being published by Sarasavi Publishers in 1998. [4] [5] It is set in the 1930s.
None of Sinhala novels of that period had been as successful as Jayatissa and Rosalyn. Piyadasa Sirisena also was the first novelist in the country to produce detective stories. He wrote five of detective novels and one of them "Dingiri Menika" was made into a highly successful film in the mid 1950s . [ 6 ]
Gamperaliya (The Transformation of a Village) is a novel written by Sri Lankan writer Martin Wickremasinghe [2] and first published in 1944. Wickremasinghe subsequently wrote Kaliyugaya and Yuganthaya, as a trilogy encompassing three generation of the same family and the changing society, culture and economic environment of Sri Lanka between the early and mid 20th century.
Some of his books are used as text books for Sinhala General Certificate of Education Advanced Level examination and at Universities. Three of his novels won the Sinhala Literary Awards granted by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. K. Jayatilake was one of Sri Lanka's topmost creative writers of the modern period of Sinhala literature. Using his close observations of village life, Jayatilake was a pioneer in the Sinhalese realistic novel. His first creative work, Punaruppattiya, a collection of short stories published in 1955, was well received.
His work spans a critical study of king Ashoka, nine novels in English, six novels in Sinhala and a collection of poems, and numerous articles in newspapers, journals and magazines. He is the author of the first e-novel in Asia, 'The Saadhu Testament' (1998), and the first e-novel in Sinhala, 'Vessan Novu Wedun' (2003).
