The Chevrolet Astro is a minivan that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger van and cargo van.
As of July 2006, Rickenbacker is the world's 126th busiest cargo airport according to Air Cargo World. [19] Rickenbacker ranks as one of the world's top 20 fastest growing cargo airports in July 2006 with 112,888 tons, a 15.3% increase from the previous year.
Alongside the passenger van, the model line was sold by Dodge as a cargo van; from 1984 to 1988, it was known as the Dodge Mini Ram Van and as the Dodge (Grand) Caravan C/V from 1989 to 1990.
A commercial cargo version of the Caravan, called the Mini Ram Van, was also introduced for 1984, with a flat-floored cargo space offering a four-foot interior height and featuring four feet of space between the rear wheel wells. The load capacity was 1,700 lb (770 kg). [12] It was renamed the Caravan C/V for 1989 and was discontinued after 1995.
Two generations of the model line were produced, with the Villager undergoing a full redesign for 1999. In a first for the minivan segment, the model line replaced a removable rear seat with a design that was repositionable (dependent on passenger or cargo use). The Villager was the last Mercury developed with the lightbar grille used by the brand.
These vehicles were marketed with the generic "Van" and "Wagon" names (for cargo and passenger vans, respectively). [37] [38] In 1989, the Mazda MPV was released as the first Japanese-brand minivan developed from the ground up specifically for the North American market. Its larger chassis allowed an optional V6 engine and four-wheel drive to fit.
