Smith Motor Wheel 1917 Smith Flyer. The Smith Flyer was an American automobile manufactured by the A.O. Smith Company in Milwaukee from 1915 until about 1919 when the manufacturing rights were sold to Briggs & Stratton and it was renamed the Briggs & Stratton Flyer.
In 1913, Lloyd Raymond Smith took over, and in 1914, the company introduced the Smith Motor Wheel, a gasoline-powered device for bicycles. In 1915, it began manufacturing the Smith Flyer, which it later sold to Briggs & Stratton of Milwaukee. A year later in 1916, A. O. Smith was incorporated in New York.
The Smith brothers financed the building of a factory and the first automobiles were sold to the public in August, 1902. [1] Early two-cylinder Smiths were marketed as Veracity with Smith becoming the marque name with the introduction of larger cars.
