Aspen Mountain (often called by its former name of Ajax among locals) is a ski area in the western United States, located in Pitkin County, Colorado, just outside and above the city of Aspen. Situated on the north flank of Aspen Mountain (for which it is named), its summit elevation is 11,212 feet (3,417 m) above sea level .

The B-Zones (for blue wax) face east and descend down the center of the bowl from the 12,392 ft (3,777 m) summit of Highland Peak. The south-facing Y-Zones (yellow wax), are the steepest, with slopes as steep as 48 degrees, according to Aspen Highlands trail maps. These can be skied without hiking.

Lizard Lake is located on public land, however physical access to Lizard Lake is limited due to terrain and road conditions. A high clearance vehicle or other means of transportation is required to reach the lake (e.g. foot, horse, mountain bike, off-road vehicle). Pets are allowed on the trail connecting to Lizard Lake.
The byway starts in Aspen, traveling on SH 82 east over Independence Pass and near the Twin Lakes to just north of the town of Granite. The route then continues north on US 24 through Leadville to Interstate 70 (I-70). A spur of the byway continues along the entire length of SH 91 from Leadville to Copper Mountain, through Fremont Pass. [4]
