Sheep Mountain is located six miles (9.7 km) north of Gardiner, Montana, in the northern Absaroka Range, which is a subrange of the Rocky Mountains. [1] It is set in the Absaroka–Beartooth Wilderness on land managed by Gallatin National Forest. [1] Precipitation runoff from the mountain drains into tributaries of the Yellowstone River.
The Absaroka Range is a sub-range of the Rocky Mountains in the United States. The range stretches about 150 mi (240 km) across the Montana – Wyoming border, and 75 mi (120 km) at its widest, forming the eastern boundary of Yellowstone National Park along Paradise Valley , and the western side of the Bighorn Basin .
Paradise Valley is a major river valley of the Yellowstone River in Southwestern Montana just north of Yellowstone National Park in Park County. The valley is flanked by the Absaroka Range on the east and the Gallatin Range on the west. [1] The Paradise Valley is separated from the Gallatin Valley and Bozeman, MT, by the Bozeman Pass.
The road was destroyed in the 2022 Montana floods. [6] Most of the road was washed away by the river. [7] On October 30, 2022, Old Gardiner Road was opened to regular visitor traffic between Gardiner and Mammoth Hot Springs, to bypass the damaged North Entrance Road. [8]
