A slider is a type of delivery bowled by a wrist spin bowler. Whereas a topspinner is released with the thumb facing the batsman, a slider is bowled with the thumb facing the bowler. On release the wrist and ring finger work to impart backspin to the ball. A topspinner tends to dip more quickly and bounce higher than a normal delivery.
The great English finger spinner Derek Underwood is famous for bowling finger spin in this manner. Additional spin may be put on the ball through two other means: the active supination of the arm from an initially pronated position just before the ball is released, and the flexion or extension of the wrist at the moment of release.
Wrist spinners are bowlers who use their wrists to spin the ball. A right-handed wrist spinner is known as a leg spinner and his or her mode of bowling is known as leg break. A leg break will move from right to left from the bowler's point of view, or from the leg-side to the off-side for a right-handed batsman.
A bowler who uses this technique is called a spinner, [1] [2] a spin bowler, [1] or a slow bowler. [3] It is one of the two main approaches to bowling, the other being fast bowling. A spinner may bowl with their right-arm or left-arm, and with a finger spin or wrist spin action.
It is the finger spin equivalent of a wrist spinner's slider or zooter. In contrast to the stock delivery, an arm ball is delivered by rolling the fingers down the back of the ball on release. This puts backspin onto the ball, which does not turn appreciably off the pitch. Instead, it travels straight on in the direction of the arm.
