During the Prohibition era, several cutters were assigned to Cape May to foil rumrunners operating off the New Jersey coast. After Prohibition, the Coast Guard all but abandoned Cape May leaving a small air/sea rescue contingent. For a short period of time (1929–1934), part of the base was used as a civilian airport.

Fort Miles was supplemented by three batteries at the Cape May Military Reservation in New Jersey. The first was Battery 25 with four 155 mm (6.1 in) guns on Panama mounts, built in 1942. Battery 223, a 6-inch (152 mm) battery similar to Batteries 221 and 222 at Fort Miles, was built in 1943.

Cape May Inlet is 1 mile (1.6 km) long and connects Cape May Harbor with the Atlantic Ocean, and separates Two Mile Beach to the northeast from Poverty Beach to the southwest. It is 2.5 miles (4.0 km) northeast of the City of Cape May. The United States Coast Guard Training Center Cape May is located on the southwest shore of Cape May Inlet.
