There is a long tradition of comedy roasts, with standard elements such as the roastee, roastmaster, panel of guests and so on. There is also a tradition of "insult comedy" - comedians or would-be comedians insulting audience members, celebrities, or passers-by in order to get a laugh. Roasts can certainly be seen as a subset of insult comedy.
