Edgar Peak is the highest point of the Providence Mountains and the Providence Mountains State Recreation Area. [4] It is set within the Mojave National Preserve. Precipitation runoff from this mountain's west slope drains to Kelso Wash, whereas the east slope drains to Clipper Valley.
Natural features include the Kelso Dunes, the Marl Mountains and the Cima Dome, as well as volcanic formations such as Hole-in-the-Wall and the Cinder Cone Lava Beds. The preserve surrounds Providence Mountains State Recreation Area and Mitchell Caverns Natural Preserve, which are both managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation.

The mountain contains a large number of lava tubes, which are frequented by cavers. The most well known cave is the 1,300-foot (400 m)-long SPJ Cave. [8] Located in the Basin and Range Province, the Mojave Valley and then the Cady Mountains lie to the north of the peak, while the Rodman Mountains lie to the west.
