Sofitel Hotels & Resorts are a French hotel chain of luxury hotels based in Paris, France, and owned by Accor since 1980. Founded in 1964 in France, Sofitel quickly developed worldwide to reach more than 200 properties. In 2008, Sofitel became a brand of luxury hotels only, downsized its property count to 89, and created new brands.
In June 1990, the AccorHotels group bought a minority stake in CIWL. [2] After fully acquiring CIWL in 1991, AccorHotels turned all Pullman Hotels into Sofitel Hotels in 1993, thus taking the Pullman brand off the market. [3] In 2007, AccorHotels revived the upscale Pullman hotel brand to cater to business travelers. [4]
The luxury hotels division (previously known as Société du Louvre) can trace its origins to a company founded on 26 March 1855 to operate Les Galeries du Louvre, later Grands Magasins du Louvre, a department store and the Grand Hôtel du Louvre. These shared a large building on the Place du Palais Royal in Paris, France.
