The saw chain, or cutting chain, is a key component of a chainsaw. It consists of steel links held together by rivets , and superficially resembles the bicycle -style roller chain , although it is closer in design to a leaf chain.
Stihl was founded in 1926 by Andreas Stihl, an innovator in early chainsaw production. Stihl says it is the world's best-selling brand of chainsaws and the only chainsaw manufacturer to make its own saw chains and guide bars. [4] Andreas Stihl AG is a privately held company owned by the descendants of Andreas Stihl.
The chain has to be properly matched to the guide bar and the saw. Chainsaw manufacturers specify a selection of suitable chains for each model of saw. Best safety requires that the chain is properly sharpened. One key sharpening parameter is the depth gauge setting. The depth gauge is the small steel protuberance in front of each cutting tooth.
To achieve optimal surface speed and cutting conditions, burrs are rapidly rotated at high speeds, often in the range of thousands or tens of thousands of RPM, which is typically the maximum speed supported by a given spindle. The cutters depicted in the image, being made of tungsten carbide, can withstand and operate at these elevated speeds.

A fixed line style string trimmer head. A fixed-line string trimmer has a trimmer head that takes pre-cut line inserts. There is no wound spool of line in the trimmer head; the user instead feeds the pre-cut line in to the appropriate slots, making the trimmer easier to feed line into and troubleshoot than a bump feed system. Rotary cutting tools include drill bits, countersinks and counterbores, taps and dies, reamers, and cold saw blades. Other cutting tools, such as bandsaw blades, hacksaw blades, and fly cutters, combine aspects of linear and rotary motion. The majority of these types of cutting tools are often made from HSS (High-Speed-Steel).
