The eight, 58-metre (190 ft) aluminium monohulls were delivered between March 2013 and August 2015. [citation needed] In December 2015, Austal entered into a shipbuilding contract with the National Australia Bank to construct two further Cape-class patrol boats. The contract value is A$63 million.

The ship is one of the original six evolved Cape-class patrol boats the RAN ordered in April 2020 to replace the Armidale-class patrol boats in this role, at a projected cost of A$324 million. The patrol boat's primary duty lies in fisheries protection, immigration, customs and drug law enforcement operations. A $63 million contract for two more boats, for lease by the RAN, was awarded to Austal by the National Australia Bank in December 2015. [1] Subsequently, the RAN ordered another eight Evolved Cape-class patrol boats from Austal. [2] [3] In November 2023, the RAN ordered a further two evolved Cape-class patrols, at a cost of A$157.1 million. [4]
The ordered vessels are constructed similarly to the current Cape class model, which is a “58 metre aluminium monohull patrol boat design”. [24] Reported design enhancements include increased crew accommodation capacity from 22 people to 32 people and enable Wi-Fi connectivity aboard the vessel. [ 24 ]
