It was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 11 October 1982, and was designed by Lawrence Nield in 1980. In 2015/2016, the average available bed number was 161. Penrith can be accessed from St. Marys and Mount Druitt via the Great Western Highway. Access from further east is best obtained by the M4 Western Motorway using either The Northern Road or Mulgoa Road exits. If travelling east from the Blue Mountains, access is best obtained by the Great Western Highway.

The original Mount Druitt station opened on 19 August 1881. On 8 December 1974, a new station opened 500 metres to the east built, partly funded by the developer of the Westfield Shopping Centre.
