Hutto was established in 1855 when the International-Great Northern Railroad passed through land owned by John Hutto (1824–1914), for whom the community is named. Railroad officials designated the stop Hutto Station. James Hutto was born in Alabama on June 8, 1824; he came to Texas in 1847 and moved his family to Williamson County in 1855.

The two routes merge with the northbound TX 121, and all three continue to the east until TX 26 departs onto a frontage road and meets Texan Trail. This intersection forms the southern terminus of the former Loop 382, still signed as a business route of TX 114. TX 26 turns north onto Texan Trail, concurrent with the business route.
FM 973 was first designated in Williamson County on November 23, 1948; its original routing was from SH 95 north of Coupland to the Travis County line. It was extended southward into Travis County on May 23, 1951, to an intersection with the former SH 20 (present-day US 290) in Manor, replacing FM 1326. [7]
That same year, three area schools – McGirk, Center City, and Hurst Ranch – consolidated with Star. In 1940, the W.P.A. erected a new school designed by Wyatt C. Hedrick for the Star Independent School District; it is the only school built in Mills County by the W.P.A. [ 6 ] The population stood at around 170 in the mid-1940s.
