In 1867, fire destroyed his residence nearby. Fortunately, the blacksmith's shop was saved with the help of Aboriginal man, Bobby Hamilton, and other Ginninderra neighbours. McAuliffe was one of the key advocates for a district school and supported the free selectors in Ginninderra. He led the formation of the Ginninderra Protection Union. [9]
Murrumbateman is a town in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia. It is on the Barton Highway , approximately 30 kilometres north-west of Canberra , and is part of the Yass Valley Shire .
There is a small shopping centre in the suburb, on the main internal road, Pockett Avenue. It includes two small take-away food shops, a pet grooming shop and a SUPAEXPRESS supermarket. Banks 1, Banks' only oval, is used for local events such as Little Athletics and the Saint Clare of Assisi Primary School Athletics Carnival.
Chapman has a population of 2867 as of the 2021 census with 853 total families. 60.9% of Chapman's population is married with 14.2% being divorced, separated or widowed, while the remaining 39.3% of people never married.
Bowning railway station is on the Main South railway line, and opened in 1876 consisting of two island platforms. [4] The station closed in 1992; however, the structure is still largely intact with a double storey station building on the down platform (now a local craft shop).
The village – a quiet residential area – does not have any commercial establishments within its boundaries; the nearest shop is located 22 kilometres (14 mi) away, in the town of Bigga. It does, however, possess a public hall, a showground, and a council rubbish dump. The Reids Flat Public School was officially closed on 17 December 2014. [7]
Prominent buildings today include the old Flag Hotel (c. 1852), St James Anglican Church, the government school, Rose Cottage, an inn built about 1890, the steam mill built about 1860, the former store-post office (c. 1870), the Anglican rectory (1874) and Binda cemetery (interments date back to 1850).
