Cole County is located in the central part of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 census, its population was 77,279. [1] Its county seat and largest city is Jefferson City, the state capital. [2] The county was organized November 16, 1820, and named after pioneer William Temple Cole who built Cole's Fort in Boonville. [3]

Taos is located in eastern Cole County on Missouri Route M between Wardsville to the west and Schubert to the east. [10]According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.27 square miles (5.88 km 2), of which 2.23 square miles (5.78 km 2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km 2) is water.

The Cole County R-1 School District serves Russellville with an elementary school and a junior/senior high School, Home of the Indians. The elementary building originally served grades K-8, but in 2022, grades 7th and 8th were transferred to the high school building. The high school building was built in the year 2000.
