Again, the leaders raise their hands after the 9th lap, but before everyone can pit, Mick Doohan and Kocinski collide, sliding without serious injury. The podium of the second leg is Lawson, Schwantz and Rainey, but the race organizers decide to run a third leg in the wet.
Chandler took the lead of a 4-man group with Schwantz, Doohan and Kocinski. Kocinski crashed out. Doohan and Chandler dropped Schwantz. Gardner had remounted and gotten to 5th before crashing out for good a second time and breaking his leg in two places. Ralf Waldmann, riding his bike at the 125cc race, which he went on to win.
The event is notable for being the last round that 5-time 500cc and reigning World Champion Mick Doohan participated in. Doohan did not start the race due to crashing in the wet qualifying session, resulting in career-ending leg injuries.
