James Stanley McCarty (born 25 July 1943) [1] is an English musician, best known as the drummer for the Yardbirds and Renaissance. [2] Following Chris Dreja's departure from the Yardbirds in 2013, McCarty became the only founding member to still tour in the band.

After Keith Relf's death, the band was re-shuffled, bringing in John Knightsbridge on lead guitar and Eddie McNeill on drums, with McCarty sharing vocals with Jane Relf and also playing rhythm guitar. Unable, for legal reasons, to use the name Renaissance, they chose "Illusion" – which had been the title of their second album as Renaissance.
"Forever Changing" was the only Renaissance song on which drummer Terry Sullivan wrote all the music. His only other writing credit with the band was on the title track of the preceding album, A Song for All Seasons. A pre-release track listing, published in the Renaissance Appreciation Society newsletter, included the song "Island of Avalon".

When the four surviving members of the original Renaissance reunited in 1976, after the death of Keith Relf, the Renaissance name was already being retained in use by their successors in the band. Henceforth they named the reformed band "Illusion", alluding to the album they had recorded as the previous group.
