The prison was opened in 1999 and has seven housing units, occupying 67 acres (27 ha), used for Michigan Department of Corrections male prisoners 18 years of age and older. Six of the housing units are used by the general prison population, one of which is an Adaptive Skills Residential Program (ASRP) Unit.
That dream became a reality on November 21, 1911, when the Sisters opened St. Joseph's Sanitarium, a small hospital located in a former student rooming house at the corner of State and Kingsley streets. The little hospital had a nine-member medical staff and 17 beds on the second and third floors, including eight private rooms.
