The place-name 'Tankerton' is first attested in The Book of Fees for 1242, where it appears as Tangrenton. The name means 'the town or settlement of Tancred's people'. [2] Tankerton-on-Sea was a commercial development by the Tankerton Estate Company in the late 19th century, and was designed with a grid of streets leading from the shoreline.
The height of Tankerton slopes vary across the site, but are approximately 50 feet (15 metres) high when measured from the promenade or 66 feet (20 metres) in elevation from sea level. The bottom of the slope is fronted by Beach huts , [ 5 ] and has a promenade that runs from Whitstable to Swalecliffe that is popular with dog walkers and cyclists.

There are no water mains, electricity mains, or medical services on the island. There is one small general store and post office located on Tankerton Road about 3 km (1.9 mi) from Tankerton Jetty. Many of the locals actively promote environmental tourism. Visitor accommodation includes camping, bed and breakfast, guesthouse and farmstay.
The station opened in 1830. It was extended in the mid-1870s and resited in 1895. The Canterbury and Whitstable line closed to passengers in 1931 and freight in 1952, although it was reopened for a month following the North Sea flood of 1953.
