A total of 1081 men served in the 34th Iowa at one time or another during its existence. [1] It suffered 1 officer and 11 enlisted men who were killed in action or who died of their wounds and 2 officers and 244 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 258 fatalities.
The 10th Iowa Infantry was organized at Iowa City, Iowa, and Montezuma, Iowa, and mustered into Federal service on September 6 (9 companies) [1] and September 28, 1861 (remaining company). [1] The regiment was mustered out on August 15, 1865, in Little Rock, Arkansas.
On April 9, 1865, the consolidated 34th Iowa Infantry participated in the last major battle of the Civil War at Fort Blakeley, Alabama. The regiment (including many soldiers from the old 38th Iowa Infantry) charged 500 yards against a redoubt ; the regiment's casualties included one soldier killed and seven wounded from the old 38th.
