Avoid stripping away the existing anodize from the critical pin holes, they won't show anyway. Tell the anodizer that you want an exta thick Type II layer, 2 mils thick. A thick layer will avoid the metallic look inappropriate on ARs. If they insist on a "Type III" (hardcoat) layer then so be it.
Lets say you are anodizing at 6 amps per sq. ft... using the calculator, you'll see in order to build 1 mil., you will anodize for 2 hours. This is true regardless of size of the part. The bigger the part, the higher the amps, but you will still anodize for 2 hours to build 1 mil. BTW, you will never build more than 1 mil.

Caswell's desmut at 120F works well to remove smut before ano. 2xxx and 7xxx alloys will build the ano layer quickly. I suggest reducing the calculated ano times by 25% (1-1/2 hours instead of 2 hours for 1mil at 6 amps CD).
Hello, I am new to anodizing and have a question. I anodized a small 6061 aluminum part. The part passes the conductivity test but when I dyed it (Caswell Black) it only turned grey. I left the part in the dye for about an hour. I am thinking that I didn't have hot enough. I tried re dye the part making sure that the dye temp
Re: How long does it take to anodize a small 6" piece of aluminum black? Besides the actual ano time, there is prep and finish. If your parts are freshly milled, and all you want is a mill minish, then you can pretty much go straight to the ano tank after a quck degrease step.
I am guessing the anodize thickness is too thin to make a major difference in clutch basket wear, but I home I'm wrong. Anyways, was gonna get this power supply: DC Power Supply - Switching Power Supply - Mastech Power Supply HY3080EX 30V 80A Over Voltage Over Current Protection 110V Input (Powered by CubeCart) Mastech 3080, 30V and 80 Amps.
Rinsed in distilled water. Soaked in a lye/distilled water mixture for 3 minutes. During this time, the 7075 piece turned a black/brown color. 6061 stayed the same. Rinsed again. Placed in the anodizing bucket with a mixture of 1 gal (automotive store) battery acid and 1.5 gal distill water. Racked using Ti wire.
Keep it simple and friendly. Color anodizing titanium for appearance (not functional) can be achieved in most any. sulfuric anodizing or hard anodizing bath by first cleaning the titanium in a nitric/hydrofluoric. bath (25-35% nitric with 2-4 oz/gal hydrofluoric) for about 10-30 seconds. You then anodize.
Here is my process: Deox/DeSmut. Spray with distilled water over deox bucket. Dip in deox rinse bucket, then with spray over rinse bucket. Anodize part at 4-6 Amp/SqFt per 720 rule. Spray with distilled water over anodizing bath. Place into baking soda neutralizing bath. Spray with distilled water over soda bath.
Tweet. #6. 03-29-2013, 08:30 AM. Re: Lye to strip anodize question. I've just invested an arm and a leg in titanium to hold our aluminum parts to anodize. The titanium turned a blue color in batch one. I was under the impression the titanium wouldn't anodize, therefore making electrical contact in the next batch, and hopefully lasting a ...
