Humber Lifeboat Station is an All-weather lifeboat station based at the mouth of the River Humber. The station was opened in 1810, and was located on Spurn Point in the East Riding of Yorkshire . Previously operated by Hull Trinity House , it was transferred to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in 1911.
The coast from Bridlington in the north to Spurn Point is an interesting complex of coastal processes. The soft cliffs of Holderness are subject to rapid erosion whilst the eroded material is being deposited on the Spurn peninsula. The speed of erosion along the glacial till cliffs prohibits colonisation of anything but sparse ruderal vegetation.
The station remained in operation until 1978, when the All-weather lifeboat was withdrawn, and the former station at nearby Staithes was reopened as an Inshore lifeboat station. [1] A rescue service was re-established in 1982 by the locally formed Runswick Bay Rescue Boat Association (RBRB). [2]
Two more boats were built in 1988, with the first one to take up active service going to Bridlington Lifeboat Station the following year. [2] In 1989, 12-11 Lifetime Care (ON 1148) was built with a fibre-reinforced composite (FRC) hull. Boats built in 1990 continued to use aluminium but from 1991 FRC became the standard hull material.
