The Battle of Philippeville, also known as the Philippeville massacre or the August Offensive, was a series of raids launched on 20 August 1955 on various cities and towns of the Constantine region by FLN insurgents and armed mobs during the Algerian War between France and the Algerian rebels.
Skikda (Arabic: سكيكدة; formerly Philippeville [1] from 1838 to 1962 and Rusicade [1] in ancient times) is a city in northeastern Algeria and a port on the Mediterranean. It is the capital of Skikda Province and Skikda District .
On 3 August 1914, the two ships were en route to Algeria when Souchon received word of the declaration of war against France. Goeben bombarded Philippeville, French Algeria, for about 10 minutes early on 3 August while Breslau shelled nearby Bône, in accordance with the Kaiser's order. [10]
Skikda Airport was an airport in Algeria (IATA: SKI, ICAO: DABP), located approximately 5 km east of Skikda; about 60 km north-northeast of Constantine. The 1,478 metres (4,849 ft) asphalt runway was closed sometime prior to 2004. The area is overbuilt and used as a storage for construction materials.

On August 20, 1955, he planned an attack against the French in Philippeville (currently called Skikda) and its surroundings [citation needed], which is commonly referred to as the Battle of Philippeville. The attack led to a harsh crackdown and repression by the French government.
In 1955 he was transferred to Philippeville, Algeria to be part of the 41st Parachute Demi-Brigade as an intelligence officer. He restarted his demi-brigade's intelligence unit, which had been disbanded during peacetime but was deemed necessary by the French Army , which wanted to quell the insurgency of the Algerian rebels.
He planned to bombard the embarkation ports of Bône and Philippeville in French Algeria. Goeben was heading for Philippeville, while Breslau was detached to deal with Bône. At 18:00 on 3 August, while still sailing west, he received word that Germany had declared war on France.
