The Washingtonville Central School building later became the high school building and, until the 1990s, served as Washingtonville Junior High School. The Moffat Library, officially Moffat Library of Washingtonville, serves a population of 25,000 people [3] in the village of that name in Orange County, New York, as well as the surrounding towns of Blooming Grove, Hamptonburgh and New Windsor. It is located in the center of town, at the intersection of NY 208 and NY 94.
Vincent Mathews was likely the earliest settler who purchased the Rip Van Dam patent in 1721, built a grist mill and named his settlement "Mathewsfield." [2] He is the father of David Mathews, a Loyalist who was Mayor of New York during the American Revolutionary War, and Fletcher Mathews, also a Loyalist and alleged abettor to schemes against the newly forming republic.
