When Hostelling International was founded, representatives agreed on the introduction of an international membership card and established minimum standards for hostels. The organisation was founded in 1931 as the Scottish Youth Hostels Association (SYHA).. The first youth hostel in Scotland was a converted row of four cottages in Broadmeadows and opened on 2 May 1931.
