The Naugatuck Valley League (NVL), the oldest high school sports league in Connecticut, has a storied history of athletic competition dating back to its initial formation in 1918 [2]. The first attempt to establish a high school football league in the Naugatuck Valley featured teams such as Naugatuck, Torrington, Crosby, Meriden, and Bridgeport.
The SCC, having expanded to 23 member schools, decided to realign its divisional format for the 2004/2005 academic year. The league added a fourth division, Oronoque, also named after a Native American river in Southern Connecticut. The SCC also decided to realign its football-playing schools, primarily based on student enrollment. [1]

In the late 80s, as a result of an effort by the Commissioner of Education and the Superintendents of many of our school districts, a movement emerged to expand athletic conferences and have them represent schools of greater variety in terms of socio-economic population, racial and ethnic population, and geography.
In July 1999 founding member Enfield High school would leave the CCC Conference to join the NCCC. E.O. Smith applied to join the CCC Conference in 1999 due to increasing enrollment, E.O. Smith would replace the departing Enfield high school. [1]
