The Flathead National Forest is a national forest in the western part of the U.S. state of Montana. The forest lies primarily in Flathead County , south of Glacier National Park . The forest covers 2,404,935 acres (3,758 sq mi; 9,732 km 2 ) of which about 1 million acres (4,000 km 2 ) is designated wilderness .
MT 83 starts at the intersection with MT 200 at Clearwater Junction, about 40 miles (64 km) east of Missoula, and runs north-northwesterly, mostly through broad, forested valleys and along scenic lakeshores within the Lolo National Forest, Flathead National Forest and Swan River State Forest, before curving west to its northern terminus at MT 35 about 3 miles (4.8 km) north of Bigfork.

The wilderness is located in parts of Flathead, Lewis and Clark, Powell, Teton, Missoula, and Pondera counties, and lies mostly within Flathead National Forest (70.3%) and partially within Lewis and Clark National Forest. [4] The wilderness can be accessed by trails (via foot travel or on horseback) from surrounding roads.
North of the lake the highway runs through the cities of Kalispell and Whitefish, traveling through the Flathead National Forest and the Stillwater State Forest before reaching its terminus at the Canada–US border near Eureka. On entering Canada, the roadway becomes British Columbia Highway 93.
United States federal law defines the term Forest Highway as "a forest road under the jurisdiction of, and maintained by, a public authority and open to public travel." [2] Forest highways are designated by the United States Forest Service and funded by the federal government, but are generally owned and maintained by the states or counties in which they are located.
