Avril Danica Haines (born August 27, 1969) is an American lawyer who served as the director of national intelligence in the Biden administration. [1] She is the first woman to serve in this role. Haines previously was Deputy National Security Advisor and deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the Obama administration.
The first woman to hold the office, she was nominated by President-elect Joe Biden on November 23, 2020 [9] and confirmed by the Senate on January 20, 2021. [10] On November 13, 2024, President-elect Donald Trump announced his intention to nominate Tulsi Gabbard for Director of National Intelligence upon returning to the Presidency in January 2025.
