The Mining Gazette was founded in Ontonagon, Michigan in July 1858 by George Emerson. In 1860, the paper was purchased by James R. Devereau and moved to Houghton, where it was published weekly as The Portage Lake Mining Gazette. The paper began daily publication on 14 September 1899. [3]
The Portage Lake High School was built to replace the undersized Rock School, but was gutted by fire in 1921. A replacement, Houghton High School, was completed in 1924. [5] The current building was constructed in 1989 [6] up the hill from the previous site. The Portage Lake High School was demolished in 1999.
