A Melbourne Art Tram designed by Matthew Clarke for the 2017 project. The Melbourne Art Trams is a major public art project in Melbourne, Australia.It is a revival and re-imagining of the Transporting Art project which ran from 1978 to 1993 and saw 36 painted W-class trams rolled out across the Melbourne network.

In 1979 Ryan painted the bodywork of Melbourne No.8 tram [23] as an early contributor to the project ‘Transporting Art’ [24] undertaken between 1978-1983 in which 16 older but still operating trams were decorated by artists and designers including Clifton Pugh, Mirka Mora, Howard Arkley, Gareth Sansom and Erica McGilchrist.

The Melbourne Tramcar Preservation Association was established 1974 as the Haddon Tramway Workshops. Its first purchase was a former Ballarat tram. [ 1 ] It subsequently purchased a number of trams from the Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (M&MTB) and one former Victorian Railways tram.
