Hence I have purchased a USB-LAN adapter as I do not have wifi where I live. The adapter is not being recognised by the laptop. The first thing I'd do is go to Control Panel, Power Options and change settings so the USB ports are not being turned off by Windows, might even change settings for Sleep and Hibernation [I've seen issues with both of those]. As for "I've no access to the router unfortunately" you may be able to find an open HotSpot such as the library ...
