Yohanna Madaki was born in 1941 in Ziturung Ka̠ryi, Zangon Kataf Local Government Area in Kaduna State.He attended the then St Paul's Primary School in Zonkwa Kaduna State and thereafter proceeded to the Nigerian Military School (NMS) Zaria.
For his primary school studies, he attended St. Bartholomews Primary School, Wusasa, Zaria, and proceeded to the Nigerian Military School (NMS) Zaria in January 1963. By the time he was in Class 3, he was the school high jumper and also played basketball for the school. The January 1966 coup took place while he was in school in Zaria.

In September 2017, he was made the Life Patron of the Nigerian Military School (NMS) Zaria Ex-Boys Association (FCT Chapter). Four other eminent alumni - Lt. Gen. Isaac Chikadibia Obiakor (rtd), Col. John Okoli (rtd), Col. Musa Shehu (rtd) and Gp. Capt. Yakubu Suleiman - were decorated as Patrons of the Chapter for the year 2017/2018.
